Chicago Fire revealed on Monday that they have secured the signing of Robert Lewandowski through the 2027-28 campaign. The all-time leading scorer for Poland will fill a designated player position once his visa is authorized and the international transfer documentation is finalized.
The team hailed Lewandowski, 37, as “a worldwide soccer legend” across their social channels. He was available without a transfer fee following a four-year stint with Barcelona, where he netted 83 goals and added 19 assists in 134 league appearances (114 starts), helping the side claim three La Liga championships.
Before that, he competed in Germany’s Bundesliga for 12 seasons, featuring for Dortmund (2010-14) and Bayern Munich (2014-22), collecting 10 league titles and a Champions League trophy in 2020. His 344 goals in all competitions during eight years at Bayern Munich rank second in the club’s history, trailing only Gerd Müller.
Lewandowski was widely seen as the leading candidate for the Ballon d’Or in 2020, but the honor was canceled that year due to the global health crisis. He placed second in the 2021 Ballon d’Or voting and claimed the Best Fifa men’s player prize in both 2020 and 2021.
He stands comfortably as Poland’s record holder for international caps (167) and goals (89), having played in each of the last four European Championships and the previous two World Cups, before the nation failed to reach the 2026 tournament.
His combined 697 goals for club and country since his debut in 2008 place him seventh on the all-time list and third among currently active players, behind Cristiano Ronaldo (975) and Lionel Messi (917).
The Fire (8-4-2, 26 points) sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference at the World Cup break, having ended a seven-year postseason absence last season.
