Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have been hit by a major injury setback after central defender William Saliba was ruled out for “a considerable length of time” due to a back problem.
Saliba managed a back issue during France’s path to the World Cup semifinals, and while he does not require surgery, the 25-year-old is now facing a long stint away from the pitch. He was withdrawn just half an hour into France’s semifinal defeat against Spain.
“Follow-up specialist assessments after William returned to London earlier this week have now established that he sustained a back injury that necessitates a course of rehabilitation,” Arsenal revealed in a statement. “In-depth examinations have decided against surgery, and William is instead set to enter a carefully managed recovery programme.
“William’s recovery will begin straight away, with continual management of the injury, and his expected absence covers an extended timeframe. The entire focus now is on backing William to help him regain full fitness as quickly as possible.”

Arsenal’s English duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice also contended with fitness troubles during the competition, though both recovered sufficiently to star in the third-place playoff, where Rice opened the scoring and Saka struck a hat‑trick.
