Newcastle have secured Aladji Bamba as their fourth new arrival of the transfer window, with the 20-year-old midfielder joining from Monaco in a deal that could eventually reach £34m.
“I’m really pleased to be joining,” Bamba stated. “The moment I learned of Newcastle’s interest, I was thrilled. I’m aware of the club’s rich past and I’ve seen the ground, which is incredible. I’m eager to get out there and play.”
Bamba, who has signed a five-year deal, becomes Newcastle’s fourth summer recruit and the fourth aged 20 or below. The French youth international midfielder—who featured 25 times for Monaco last term, catching the eye in Ligue 1 and the Champions League—follows the arrivals of former Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen (20), former Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Touré (20), and former Ajax midfielder Sean Steur (18). As an out-and-out No 6, Bamba is set to vie with Lewis Miley for the holding midfield position left vacant by Sandro Tonali’s departure to Tottenham for an initial £92.5m.
Newcastle’s recruitment strategy focuses on players aged 24 or under, typically in the £20m to £40m bracket, with strong sell-on value. The approach aims to keep a club that recently agreed a three-year settlement with Uefa following breaches of European spending rules compliant with squad investment regulations. “Aladji brings a variety of attributes to our midfield and has enormous scope to develop,” said manager Eddie Howe. “His progress since emerging at Monaco has been highly encouraging, and we feel we can help him advance further.”
In related matters, Howe is keen for Bruno Guimarães to remain at Newcastle to help Bamba settle into the Premier League. The Brazilian midfielder is a target for Arsenal and is thought to favour a move to Mikel Arteta’s side, yet the valuation is proving a major obstacle. Newcastle’s unwillingness to part with their skipper has led them to signal through third parties that any bid around £70m for a player who turns 29 later this year would be turned down.
Arsenal have yet to table an official bid, and whether they are willing to exceed £75m remains uncertain. Much could depend on whether Guimarães returns from his holiday in Brazil as scheduled next week before linking up with the squad at a training camp in La Manga, southern Spain.
