Michael Carrick nevertheless needs a player with Rashford’s experience and talent to play a major role in the club’s latest rebuilding effort. That responsibility leaves no room for disciplinary problems away from football or negative body language when matches become difficult.
Carrick appears more inclined to offer encouragement and understands the intense demands placed on United players. Those pressures become even greater when the team trails at home to a newly promoted opponent only a week after losing to another one. Such moments reveal a squad’s resilience, an area in which United have fallen short too regularly in recent years.
There has never been much doubt about Rashford’s natural talent. He looked comfortable while playing for Barcelona and represented his country at the World Cup during the summer. Before the tournament, he arranged private training sessions in Miami and invited former teammates to join him, demonstrating a serious commitment to improving his game.
Now 28, Rashford should be ready to assume greater responsibility, and Carrick is giving him that chance. Teenagers Shea Lacey and JJ Gabriel are pushing for opportunities at United, and they can benefit from the experience of a player who has already endured so much at the club. Rashford began positively on the left against Ipswich as United looked to put pressure on Dara O’Shea. Comfortable attacking in either direction, he could beat his opponent on the outside to deliver from the byline or move inside. He attempted both approaches and supplied threatening crosses, although United lacked a forward capable of converting them.
Bruno Fernandes deservedly claimed the attention after scoring three times, but United cannot continue depending on a single player, regardless of his importance. Rashford has not always matched Fernandes’s example, yet the captain’s impact should motivate the England forward to reach the standards expected by both himself and the club. Rashford was some distance from his finest form, but he remained positive and continued making runs into dangerous positions, even when a pass seemed unlikely to reach him.
Rashford may be disappointed to finish without a goal or an assist in a match where United scored five, but a damaged reputation cannot be repaired during a single 80-minute appearance. Effort must be the starting point because United face a demanding season in which every member of the squad will have a role. With a little more fortune, Bryan Mbeumo might have converted Rashford’s cross from close range instead of striking the bar, while Rashford’s saved effort could also have found the net.
United struggled to create a genuine opening against Hull and failed to score, but they produced 33 attempts on Sunday, including 11 on target. The performance showed far more purpose, intensity and attacking output, though it remained imperfect because Ipswich were still allowed opportunities. Rashford and Mbeumo were central to United’s improved second-half threat, constantly engaging the defenders and gradually exhausting them physically and mentally as the hosts took control.
Carrick said he was delighted with Rashford and believed the player would have enjoyed returning, starting the match and contributing to a strong team display. He added that Rashford handled challenging circumstances well, delivered an effective all-round performance and should continue to improve.
Although Rashford wears United’s No 9 shirt, Carrick currently prefers Benjamin Sesko as the starting centre-forward. Once the Slovenian returns to full fitness, he should give the attack another dimension because he is accustomed to converting crosses, potentially allowing Rashford and his teammates to become more effective. Having spent a year playing alongside Robert Lewandowski, Rashford knows the value of supplying a clinical finisher, and the presence of a natural striker should suit his style.
Few people anticipated that Rashford and United would extend their relationship, but player and club have been reunited. Complete harmony has not yet returned, although both sides have indicated that the partnership can still succeed, and the mutual affection remains clear.
