Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, has condemned the “intolerable, unacceptable” conduct of Argentina’s players immediately after Sunday’s World Cup final.
Leading the altercations were Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, who went after Rodri and Eric García respectively at New York New Jersey Stadium while Spanish players were celebrating their nation’s second World Cup title. Paredes also targeted Gavi of Spain.
“I didn’t notice it at the time. I was rejoicing, hugging teammates,” De la Fuente told Spanish television. “But in any case, it is inexcusable, unacceptable, it cannot be permitted. Players of that level, whom I had praised in the days before and still do, who are outstanding footballers with a tremendous manager, they must have felt just as distressed as we did seeing those reactions.”
De la Fuente also applauded his own players’ model behavior when faced with these “aggressive actions” and “provocations,” which he feels might have spiraled into something far more serious.
Though the scenes were recorded and spread extensively across social media, no sanctions have yet been issued against the Argentina players. Fifa has launched an investigation into the incidents to assess possible violations of the global governing body’s disciplinary code.
