Belgium have named former Netherlands skipper Mark van Bommel as their new head coach, with his deal set to run until Euro 2028.
The 49-year-old replaces Rudi Garcia, who left his position following Belgium’s quarter-final defeat by eventual champions Spain at the 2026 World Cup. Van Bommel is scheduled to begin his new role on 15 August.
Van Bommel’s latest managerial position was with Royal Antwerp, where he enjoyed a successful two-year period and led the team to the Belgian league championship, Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup.
“Taking charge of Belgium is a tremendous privilege,” Van Bommel said. “The country has exceptional players and huge potential. Alongside my coaching team, I aim to create a disciplined, determined and courageous side capable of challenging the strongest teams.”
Belgian Football Association sporting director Vincent Mannaert believes Van Bommel’s “experience at international level as a player and manager” can help the Red Devils “develop further, deliver strong results and fulfil their potential”.
Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond will join Van Bommel’s backroom staff. One of his first responsibilities will be preparing the team for Nations League matches against Italy, France and Turkey in September and October.
