York City have named ex-Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey as their new head coach, just a day after dismissing National League-winning boss Stuart Maynard.
Maynard steered the Minstermen to promotion by winning the National League last season, but the club parted company with him on Sunday after the board cited differing views over York’s future direction and ambitions.
Lindsey, 54, secured promotion to League One with Crawley during his initial spell at the club in 2024. However, his second tenure ended in March following 10 matches without a victory, with the team sitting only one point clear of the League Two relegation places.
His opening match in charge of York will come against his former club in an EFL Cup preliminary-round fixture on Monday, 3 August.
Maynard arrived in August last year after owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla dismissed Adam Hinshelwood, despite him having guided York to second place in 2024-25 and through the opening five matches without defeat.
That controversial move eventually delivered the desired result, with Maynard leading York to the National League championship on 108 points and bringing their decade-long absence from the EFL to an end.
The Minstermen secured top spot through a dramatic equaliser in the final minute at Rochdale, who would otherwise have claimed the division’s only automatic promotion place.
York said Lindsey, whose managerial career has also included spells at Swindon Town and MK Dons, brings extensive experience from across the EFL.
Joao Alves will serve as his assistant, while Gary Elphick, previously part of the coaching teams under Hinshelwood and Maynard, will continue in his role as first-team coach.
York will begin their League Two campaign at home to Bristol Rovers on Saturday, 15 August.
