AFC Joins UEFA and Concacaf in Rejecting FIFA Proposal

News

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has backed Uefa and Concacaf in rejecting Fifa’s proposal to offer private investors ownership stakes in its competitions.

In a statement released on Friday, the AFC argued that the plan put forward by Fifa president Gianni Infantino was unlikely to secure the widespread agreement and unity needed for it to proceed.

It described the Fifa World Cup as the highest level of international football, with its strength coming from the involvement of every confederation and the leading football nations around the globe.

The organisation added that any initiative threatening the tournament’s unity or worldwide character should be reviewed.

With the AFC joining the opposition, Fifa’s proposal is unlikely to gain enough support from members if it is put to a vote.
