US President Donald Trump has warned that removing Fifa president Gianni Infantino from office amid mounting pressure would be a “terrible mistake”.
Trump expressed his support after Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation published an open letter alleging that Infantino had damaged trust “through deception” over the abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan.
The FFE proposal involved establishing a separate company to oversee the commercial and ticketing rights for every Fifa tournament, including the World Cup. Under the plan, a private investment firm would have acquired a 21% stake.
Writing on social media, Trump said Fifa would be making a serious error if it considered replacing Infantino for any reason.
He praised Infantino’s leadership and credited him with overseeing what he described as the most successful World Cup ever, claiming the tournament had achieved results four times greater than previous editions. Trump added that Fifa would struggle to match the same level of success or profitability without him.
The United States, Canada and Mexico jointly hosted the 2026 World Cup during the summer, with Spain securing the title by defeating Argentina in the final.
