In many respects, Johansson stepped into one of the toughest roles imaginable when he was appointed, having to replace the highly regarded Askou.
Although the Dane spent just one campaign in the Scottish Premiership, his philosophy, character and style of play earned him admirers well beyond Lanarkshire.
Johansson’s ability to continue that work so smoothly has been impressive, particularly after influential players Elijah Just, Elliot Watt, Callum Slattery and Calum Ward also departed.
Halliday witnessed the current Toulouse manager’s qualities at close range during his final season as a player under Askou, and he believes many of the core principles remain unchanged with Johansson in charge.
Halliday, who reportedly leapt from his seat after Said scored his second goal against the Finnish opposition, said he admires Motherwell’s identity, progressive outlook and willingness to follow a different but clearly effective path.
He also praised the club’s commitment to squad development, its youth academy and an attractive playing style, as well as its decision to recruit a coach with similar ideas after losing an excellent manager last year.
Like many observers, the former midfielder is fully engaged by the project, although he feels one or two additions, especially a reliable goalscorer, would complete the team.
Halliday hopes the wider Scottish football community pays close attention to the work being carried out at the club.
He believes that adding one or two more attacking players could help Motherwell become every bit as strong as they were last season.
