England’s World Cup Play-Off Victory in Crete: Key Lessons from Greece

Parkinson’s first appearance intensified the discussion over Wiegman’s preferred choice for the number 10 role.

She is among several candidates for the position, alongside Chelsea attacker Lauren James, who operated with creative freedom against Greece.

James produced several moments of skill and calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Fafailia Petaloti from 30 yards during the first half, although the goal was disallowed for offside.

Manchester City’s Grace Clinton and Manchester United’s Ella Toone are also in contention after returning to the squad as injury replacements, with Aston Villa’s Lucia Kendall among the players forced to withdraw.

Laura Blindkilde Brown began in the role alongside James in Crete, while Beth Mead and Jess Park have previously featured in that position as well.

Wiegman struggled to establish a regular player in the position at Euro 2025, and more than a year later, uncertainty remains over England’s strongest number 10.

Wiegman said there is strong competition for the role, with numerous players offering a variety of different strengths.

She added that rather than viewing the situation as uncertain, she considers it a sign of the team’s depth, noting that England used two number 10s and occasionally three, with James among them.
