A little more than a month after ending his professional tennis career, Roberto Bautista Agut has begun competing in another sport, swapping the court for the football field.
The 38-year-old, who previously reached the Wimbledon semi-finals, joined Spanish seventh-division club CD Els Ibarsos and marked his pre-season debut by scoring twice in a 4-2 victory.
During his time in tennis, the Spaniard collected 12 singles trophies and helped his country win the Davis Cup in 2019.
His attention now turns to pursuing achievements on the football pitch.
Bautista Agut said on Instagram that this fresh chapter in his life was bringing him great happiness.
He also expressed hope that his promising beginning would carry on.
The move represents a return to football for Bautista Agut, who played in Villarreal’s youth system until he was 14 before deciding to focus on tennis.
Based approximately 60 miles north of Valencia, Els Ibarsos introduced Bautista Agut to their supporters before his first appearance and said they were excited to see him represent the team throughout an entire season.
The club confirmed on Instagram that Roberto Bautista Agut had officially become a CD Els Ibarsos player.
It thanked the supporters for producing a memorable atmosphere and expressed its appreciation to Bautista Agut for showing confidence in both the team and the local community.
Bautista Agut climbed as high as ninth in the world tennis rankings toward the end of 2019, following his impressive journey to the Wimbledon semi-finals earlier that year.
