Several of Chelsea’s emerging attackers have found regular starts difficult to secure, as Palmer and Rogers have been named in the starting line-up for every match.
Joao Pedro has started each of the three league fixtures, while veteran forward Danny Welbeck spearheaded the attack against Luton. Consequently, Emmanuel Emegha, who arrived from Strasbourg during the summer, has made only one appearance as an unused substitute.
Defender Aaron Anselmino has likewise not featured and has been selected for just one matchday squad, although both players have been dealing with fitness concerns.
Other offensive recruits have received very limited playing time, with Geovany Quenda and Jamie Gittens appearing for only eight and 10 minutes respectively during Chelsea’s opening four games of the campaign.
Quenda, whose signing followed interest from Manchester United in 2024, has also been omitted from two of Alonso’s matchday selections.
Competition for places could have been even tougher without the fitness problems experienced by Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson, which have occasionally reduced Chelsea’s midfield options.
Despite those absences, summer arrival Valentin Barco has managed only one start and one outing from the bench, with right-back Malo Gusto preferred in midfield. Wing-back Marco Palestra is also sidelined through injury.
With every player available, Chelsea would need to exclude six outfield members of the senior squad on matchdays, since teams in English football may select 11 starters and nine substitutes.
Past successful teams without European fixtures indicate that managers generally build their campaigns around a fairly compact group of trusted players.
Leicester City’s unexpected Premier League triumph in 2015-16 came with only 14 players making more than 15 appearances in all competitions under Claudio Ranieri.
Chelsea claimed the league title under Antonio Conte one season later while having no European schedule, and just 13 players completed more than 1,500 minutes across all competitions.
Although teams can now use five substitutes, only 14 Newcastle United players surpassed 1,500 minutes during their successful push for Champions League qualification in 2022-23.
A particularly useful comparison may be Manchester United’s third-place finish last season without European competition. Just 13 players accumulated more than 1,500 minutes in all tournaments, though the team was eliminated early from both domestic cups.
For fringe players such as Estevao, an extended run in the cup competitions could provide the minutes needed to turn brief appearances into compelling cases for greater involvement under Alonso.
