Rashford’s return was overshadowed by what Maguire described as Manchester United’s poorest pre-season display, just one week before their Premier League opener against Hull.
Captain Bruno Fernandes failed to convert a penalty for the second successive match, missing the chance to reduce the deficit to 2-1 before half-time. However, his combination play with Youri Tielemans offered some encouragement as both players completed 90 minutes for the first time.
Maguire said the team intends to operate higher up the field, play with greater intensity and adopt a more attacking approach.
He admitted this was the only fixture in which the side failed to meet those expectations. Although they regained possession in advanced areas and created several opportunities, they were unable to maintain their pressure for long enough.
During a demanding five-week pre-season featuring six matches, Maguire captained the team in the opening games while Fernandes was unavailable. This suggests he may become vice-captain for the new campaign, though no official decision has been announced.
Maguire also spoke positively about former manager Ruben Amorim.
Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, whose relationships with Amorim had become strained, were thanking supporters on the opposite side of the pitch as the Portuguese coach greeted several former players after the presentation.
Amorim and members of his coaching team exchanged several warm embraces with their former colleagues.
After the match, Amorim said he remained proud of his time at Manchester United and continued to have strong affection for the club.
Maguire was equally positive when reflecting on Amorim’s 14-month spell in charge.
He said it was wonderful to meet Amorim and his staff again.
Maguire explained that he had enjoyed an excellent relationship with Amorim and the coaching team. He was pleased the manager had received another opportunity to demonstrate his ability and expressed confidence that he would succeed.
He added that he had no criticism of Amorim, acknowledging only that the appointment had not produced the desired results at Manchester United.
Maguire noted that Amorim is now leading another major club and said he would follow their progress while wishing them an outstanding season.
