For much of the last year, the rise of American prospect Zavier Gozo has been defined by his steady development, including the lessons learned from setbacks. A day after he and his Real Salt Lake teammate Diego Luna were left out of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, the 19-year-old acknowledged that the decision showed him how near he had come to securing a place.
“I expected to be less frustrated than I actually was,” Gozo said in May. “I knew I wasn’t guaranteed a place, of course. I was disappointed, but the experience has also given me even more determination to break into the senior team when the opportunity arrives.”
A move to Crystal Palace could help him achieve that goal sooner than many might have expected twelve months ago. The Premier League side completed Gozo’s transfer from Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, signing him to a five-year contract. Reports place the fee at approximately $15m (£11m).
The transfer completes one of the fastest rises by an American male football prospect in recent years.
Gozo entered the Real Salt Lake academy in 2021, aged 14, and made his debut for the club’s second team, Real Monarchs, the following year. He first appeared in MLS in 2023 at only 16. He gradually established himself as a right wing-back who played with unusual assurance in possession, finishing his first complete season with RSL with four goals and three assists from 1,810 minutes.
This season, Gozo has been encouraged to play farther forward. His skill in crowded areas has been particularly notable, as clever touches and accurate passes have helped move RSL into threatening positions. He has also contributed more directly in the final third, recording six goals and five assists in 1,417 minutes so far.

His talent for creating shooting opportunities for himself while also producing chances for teammates sets him apart. According to Futi, Gozo has completed 67 progressive carries, placing him in a category headed by Lionel Messi, Denis Bouanga, Evander and Anders Dreyer, all members of last season’s MLS Best XI.
For a young player of Gozo’s quality, the central issue is finding the right path toward senior international selection. He was already a dependable MLS starter, but impressive league performances do not guarantee a national-team call-up. Luna, his club teammate, experienced that reality after becoming one of the most notable players omitted from Pochettino’s roster.
That context convinced Gozo that the timing might be right for a move to Europe.
“I believe I’m prepared for the next step,” Gozo added immediately. “I can’t say whether it will happen, but I know I’m in a rare position. I’m fortunate to be part of such a strong club, although I also keep asking myself what the next stage of my career should be.”
Born to an American mother and an Ivorian father, Gozo received his first call-up to the United States youth setup in 2022, joining the under-15 group. He has since become a regular across the country’s youth teams.
With Pochettino committed to leading the United States through the 2030 World Cup, Gozo is likely to compete with the players selected for this summer’s tournament as he seeks a role in the national team’s plans over the next four years. Daily training at Palace alongside established American defender Chris Richards should help keep him on Pochettino’s radar, while any Premier League appearances under new manager Pierre Sage could further strengthen his case.
