Before Flight PTN27B began descending towards El Prat shortly before 8pm on Monday, a modest group had assembled near the terminal entrance to await its arrival. Some looked towards the sky with cameras ready, while many others followed the journey on their phones. During the two-hour trip from Manchester, which began at 5.11pm after a 101-minute delay, the Pilatus PC-24 became the world’s most closely monitored aircraft. Everyone believed Rodrigo Hernández was aboard, unless he had somehow been quietly taken away in a catering vehicle.

Five days earlier, Rodri had been filmed at Barajas airport as he waited for a flight from Madrid to Manchester. Carrying a small case marked with his name and the initials of the Spanish football federation, he stood alone in line. Despite being a World Cup-winning captain, he looked like any other traveller in shorts and a T-shirt. His visit to England was expected to be brief, giving him just enough time to say farewell. The fact that he was travelling on a low-cost commercial flight attracted particular attention because of how surprisingly ordinary it seemed. This journey was different: Rodri arrived on a private aircraft with his family, holding a one-way ticket and preparing to join FC Barcelona.

Spain midfielder Rodri has finalised his €60m transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona, agreeing to a four-year contract after completing his medical examination on Tuesday.

In an official announcement, Barcelona confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Manchester City and that Rodri would represent the Catalan side until 30 June 2030.

The club described the 30-year-old as one of the leading players in his position, highlighting his tactical awareness, calmness in possession, ball-winning ability and accurate distribution.

Rodri was selected as the World Cup’s outstanding player after helping Spain claim the title during the summer. Across seven seasons at the Etihad Stadium, he won four Premier League championships and scored the decisive goal against Inter in the 2023 Champions League final. The 2024 Ballon d’Or recipient, who moved from Atlético Madrid in July 2019, had entered the last year of his City contract.

Addressing City supporters through the club’s website, Rodri said that leaving was among the hardest things he had ever faced. He explained that although he knew he was joining an elite team, he never expected the group to establish such an enduring legacy through trophies, worldwide support, affection and respect.

He added that their achievements could inspire future generations, not only because of what they won but also because of how they succeeded. Rodri thanked the supporters for accompanying the team throughout the journey and said City had helped him develop both as a footballer and as a person. Manchester had shaped his life, he said, before expressing gratitude to the club, its staff, his teammates and the fans. He concluded that the experience would always remain with him and that his heart would forever retain a connection to City.

Barcelona had an opening £40m proposal and a larger follow-up offer rejected before the clubs reached an agreement on Sunday. After landing at El Prat airport on Monday, Rodri told reporters that representing Barcelona fulfilled a lifelong ambition.

City’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, must now reshape the midfield after Rodri followed Bernardo Silva out of the club. Tijjani Reijnders is reportedly close to joining Saudi Pro League team Al Qadsiah, while Newcastle have been linked with Nico González. City have already recruited Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m and have also been associated with Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández.

Rodri said he was delighted to have arrived, and Barcelona were equally pleased to welcome him. His recognition as the World Cup’s finest player marked the completion of his return from injury, while only one year remained on his City deal. Having collected every major honour in England and seen Pep Guardiola depart, he felt drawn back to Spain after seven years abroad. He was precisely the type of midfielder the team lacked: someone capable of organising their football and controlling matches. Real were confident he would choose them and believed their proposal was the only truly viable one. Reports even presented his arrival as inevitable. Yet that certainty began to fade as the details of the negotiations changed, Rodri questioned the strength of Real’s commitment and frustration increased.

Barcelona recognised the opening and moved decisively. Although their main objective had been to recruit a forward, the opportunity to sign Rodri was too significant to ignore. Even within an already gifted midfield, he represented an obvious improvement in quality. Concerns regarding Frenkie de Jong’s fitness also altered the club’s assessment, making Rodri appear more essential than initially thought. Any uncertainty about how he might combine with Pedri for Spain seemed minor and manageable, particularly when weighed against the chance to unite two of the world’s finest midfielders. Opponents may find it extremely difficult to regain possession from them.

On the same day Real confirmed Vinícius Júnior’s contract extension and unveiled Yan Diomande as the costliest acquisition in the club’s history, officials also indicated that Rodri would not be joining. Excitement among the Santiago Bernabéu support gave way to disappointment and unease. The major weakness at the centre of Real’s midfield remained unresolved.

For Barcelona, Rodri became the defining acquisition of the summer. The World Cup-winning captain, regarded by many as the game’s finest player, was heading to Catalonia. Supporters reacted with a mixture of joy and amazement, while expectations immediately rose. Rodri expressed appreciation for Madrid’s interest but had already made his choice. After completion of the €75m package, Jorge Valdano argued that the deal’s value could be divided between the €35m benefit it brought Barcelona and the €40m setback it represented for Madrid.
