Why Are Arsenal Pursuing Konsa, and How Much Stronger Could the Gunners Become?

News

Plenty of Arsenal supporters are questioning whether Konsa will receive consistent playing time once Saliba and Gabriel are fully fit.

On paper, it will be difficult to displace Arteta’s preferred defensive unit of Timber, Saliba, Gabriel and Calafiori.

However, the Gunners featured in 63 matches across all competitions while winning the league, reaching the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals, and progressing to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Arteta’s side endured numerous injury problems throughout the campaign, and the manager is determined to prevent a repeat this season.

Following the Champions League final, Arteta stressed that Arsenal must act with ambition, speed and intelligence to build on their domestic title success.

Arsenal invested £250m last summer, while Konsa’s arrival would push their spending during the current window beyond £150m.

Arteta can now rely on one of Europe’s strongest squads in terms of depth, with its overall value estimated at £1.19bn by Transfermarkt.

Asked to identify his ideal squad size, Arteta explained that several considerations influence the final number.

Arteta said the decision depends on each player’s qualities and previous record.

He added that many elements must be considered, suggesting that 22 outfield players and three goalkeepers could be sufficient, although a larger group may sometimes be required.

The manager also highlighted the importance of reviewing the previous campaign, assessing each player’s injury history and considering how many positions certain members of the squad can cover.

Arteta expressed confidence that Arsenal will settle on the right squad size, creating strong competition while preserving teamwork and ensuring every player feels valued.
