Michael Carrick has described claims that Manchester United have been handed an easy start against Hull and Ipswich as “absurd”.
United begin their campaign away at Hull on Saturday before welcoming Ipswich the following Sunday. Although both clubs have recently earned promotion from the Championship, Carrick insists neither fixture will be straightforward. “Anyone familiar with this division knows there is no such thing as a comfortable opening,” he said. “Facing a newly promoted side on their own ground is always a difficult challenge.”
“I have experienced matches like this before, so I understand exactly what we will face on Saturday and how well prepared we must be. Calling it a favourable start is an easy claim to make, but it is rather absurd. We certainly do not see it that way.”
Carrick led United to a third-place finish last season after initially taking temporary charge in January. His successful spell earned him the permanent position four months later. Asked whether competing for the title this season is a realistic target, the 45-year-old said: “It would require a significant step forward. I would never rule it out because that is not how I think, but the key question is what we can accomplish together.”
“Our performances during last season’s strong run have given us plenty of confidence, although we understand that another level is required. We are working hard to reach it, and that is exciting. This group has the ability to achieve something meaningful. We will give everything, trust in our quality and believe we can enjoy a successful season.”
United hope to recruit Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba for a fee below £75m and are also searching for a left-back. “We want to improve the squad and are working to take full advantage of the options available,” Carrick said. “Our aim is to end the transfer window with a stronger group than the one we had at the beginning, and our progress so far has been encouraging.”
Mason Mount remains doubtful for the journey to Hull after suffering a minor injury.
