Before kick-off at O’Learys – the pool, darts, bowling and karaoke venue where Hibs supporters had gathered – the fans would have gladly accepted a goalless draw.
Belgian Pro League club Gent presented a serious challenge. Rik de Mil’s energetic team had made an unbeaten start to the season and overcame Gothenburg to reach this stage.
Gent controlled the early exchanges, pinning Hibs back and giving the visitors little opportunity to advance into the opposition half.
The momentum shifted when Warren O’Hora was brought down and Hibs were awarded a penalty. The travelling supporters gathered in the far-left corner of the Planet Group Arena suddenly began to believe.
Less than two weeks earlier, Josh Campbell had converted a penalty at Ibrox during Hibs’ victory over Rangers, but this time Owen Elding stepped forward to take responsibility.
Elding aimed a respectable effort towards the corner, but Gent goalkeeper and captain Davy Roef reacted quickly, diving low to make an excellent save from the 20-year-old. Roef had already demonstrated his penalty-saving ability during the shootout victory over Cherkasy in the second qualifying round.
Elding was understandably disappointed, but he refused to let the miss defeat him. The young player, who has received plenty of praise since moving to Leith, remained determined to influence the contest.
“Owen came into the dressing room at half-time and apologised for missing the penalty, but he also reminded us that we were playing well and urged everyone to continue,” said O’Hora, who captained the side that night. “That attitude reflects his character.”
“We offered him some reassurance, and then he demonstrated remarkable maturity for someone so young. He deserves great credit for his response.”
“He never withdrew from the challenge. He continued working hard and remained ready for his next opportunity.”
“He will have many more chances to take penalties throughout his career. After the match, I told him that I have never taken one myself and have no intention of starting.”
“I certainly do not envy the pressure he faced. He has been outstanding for us, so he has no reason to be concerned.”
