World Cup 2026: Argentina’s Paredes handed 10-match ban for final altercations

News

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has received a 10-game suspension for his involvement in clashes on the pitch following his team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Fifa’s disciplinary committee has also imposed a seven-match ban on his Argentina team-mate Nahuel Molina.

Argentina must also contest their next two home fixtures with stadium attendance limited to 50%, although the restriction for one of those games has been suspended.

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 (£235,000) for violations of Fifa’s disciplinary rules involving non-sporting demonstrations at a sporting event, improper team conduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures from supporters.

Fifa has directed the association to spend $100,000 (£73,000) of the penalty on an anti-discrimination programme. A further $100,000 (£73,000) has been suspended and will be subject to a probationary period.

Following Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England, several players displayed a banner asserting Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, which are a British overseas territory.

Last month, Fifa assigned a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate events after the final whistle at New York New Jersey Stadium, where several Argentina players and coaching staff became involved in confrontations with members of the Spain team.

In addition to their respective suspensions, Paredes and Molina have each been fined $90,000 (£66,000).

Spain midfielder Gavi has been suspended for one match and fined $30,000 (£22,000) for his involvement in the confrontations after the game. Argentina’s Thiago Almada has received the same punishment.

Argentina coaching staff member Roberto Ayala has been handed a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine.

All of the match bans will apply exclusively to international fixtures.
