Sprint icon Usain Bolt could be preparing to play for a high-profile Sunday league side in Greater Manchester after his name was added to the club’s online squad roster.
The eight-time Olympic gold medallist, who retains the 100m and 200m world records, is listed as a Wythenshawe FC Veterans player on the Football Association’s Full-Time website.
Wythenshawe compete in the Cheshire Veterans League and have assembled a team featuring numerous former elite professionals. The side is managed by ex-Manchester City and Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland and includes several players with Premier League experience.
Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Valencia, Joleon Lescott, Emile Heskey, Marc Albrighton, Nedum Onuoha and Papiss Cissé are among the notable footballers who have represented the club. Last season, the players in Wythenshawe’s squad had collectively made more than 1,800 appearances in England’s top division.
Bolt, now aged 40, has long been passionate about football. Following his retirement from athletics after the 2017 World Championships, he pursued a possible professional career in the game and spent a short period with Australian club Central Coast Mariners.
The Jamaican, a devoted Manchester United fan, has also regularly taken part in Soccer Aid charity games during the past decade. Wythenshawe have not officially confirmed his arrival and have been approached for a response.
