Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has received a fine for striking Philadelphia Union player Quinn Sullivan during Wednesday’s 2-2 Major League Soccer (MLS) draw.
The incident occurred late in the match when the 39-year-old Messi hit Sullivan on the back of the head after claiming that the Union player had elbowed him following a pass.
Sullivan responded angrily, but the referee quickly stepped in to separate the players.
League officials confirmed that Messi had been penalized financially, although the value of the fine was not disclosed.
Messi scored Miami’s second goal at Subaru Park, marking his first goal since the death of his father.
The Argentine was not the only Miami player involved in an altercation with Sullivan, as teammate Ian Fray was also fined by the league.
Fray put his hands around Sullivan’s neck after the pair became entangled when Sullivan slipped inside the penalty area.
The heated contest concluded with two stoppage-time dismissals, with Miami’s Yannick Bright and Cavan Sullivan, Quinn’s brother, both shown red cards.
Following a review, however, Cavan’s one-match suspension was overturned.
