Gianni Infantino responded to questions about his abandoned plan to sell stakes in World Cup competitions by telling a journalist: “I’ll see you at the hairdressers.”
James Matthews confronted the Fifa president outside a hotel in the Dominican Republic, asking why he had remained in his position despite growing demands from across football for his resignation.
Three continental confederations recently accused Infantino of misleading them over proposals to attract private investment into Fifa tournaments. European governing body Uefa has also warned that it could boycott Fifa competitions after losing faith in his leadership.
After locating Infantino at a hotel in the Caribbean nation, Matthews asked the 56-year-old if he had “betrayed the game of football”. Infantino avoided the question and replied: “You have a nice haircut. Thank you so much.”
While Infantino walked away, Matthews continued to press him, asking why he would not resign when supporters and Fifa associations wanted him to leave, and whether he had broken the organisation’s trust.
Before entering a waiting black vehicle, Infantino answered: “I’ll see you at the hairdressers.”
