Lionel Messi has received a fine after striking an opposing player during a Major League Soccer match. The 39-year-old Inter Miami attacker reacted against Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Wednesday’s game, making contact with the back of his head.

The Argentina international seemed frustrated after Sullivan caught him with an elbow once the ball had been played. The referee stepped in before the confrontation developed further, and the contest at Subaru Park ended in a 2-2 draw.

The league’s disciplinary committee confirmed that Messi was fined an undisclosed sum for breaching rules concerning contact with an opponent’s face, head or neck in the 101st minute of Inter Miami’s match against Philadelphia Union on 19 August.

The heated encounter also produced two late dismissals, with Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan shown red cards during stoppage time. Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined following a confrontation with Quinn Sullivan.

Miami are second in the Eastern Conference standings, trailing leaders Nashville by seven points.
