Staging its final in the world’s largest media hub ensured that the North American World Cup would inevitably place a heavy emphasis on its marquee players.
The broadcasting approach certainly leans into this trend. Matches are promoted as prizefights pitting two supremely gifted individuals against one another, rather than a tactical battle involving 22 players over an hour and a half. One last-four clash was reduced to MESSI versus KANE (or MESSI versus BELLINGHAM, depending on the network). The other relied on the wishful narrative that Lamine Yamal’s hamstring had fully recovered from his April setback. A headline like MBAPPÉ versus 600 PASSES PER GAME simply lacks the same marketing punch.
Even though they arrived as the current European champions, Spain did not attract the same level of reverence on their path to a second World Cup final as the other teams in the semifinals. Doubts were raised about their ability to compete with France. Online critics went a step further in their disrespect, labeling Luis de la Fuente’s squad as dull.
There was no cinematic moment of the Spanish manager roaring at the 70,176 spectators in Dallas, challenging them on their level of entertainment. That is not the trophy he or his players are chasing. Spectators might find Spain less thrilling when compared to the tournament’s more frantic contenders, but as France discovered on Tuesday, their methodology is devastating when properly implemented.
Euro 2024 saw De la Fuente’s team adopt a comparable style on their way to securing a fourth European crown. The team was built on a philosophy of exhausting their rivals by denying them possession. Rodri solidified his claim for the Ballon d’Or by commanding the midfield, using his superior shielding to grant his teammates more freedom to push forward. Álvaro Morata silenced his doubters by converting the chances he was given, finally acting as the focal point in attack that unlocked Spain’s full potential. On the wings were the globe’s most elusive young dribblers: Nico Williams on the left and Lamine Yamal on the right.
The majority of those components were available again for this World Cup. At the back, Unai Simón frequently ventures out of his penalty area as the defensive line pushes high. Rodri has been in exceptional shape this summer, a welcome development after an injury-plagued 2025-26 campaign that followed an anterior cruciate ligament tear the year before. Fabián Ruiz has elevated his game as a reliable partner in the double pivot, switching play out to the flanks when the passing routes to Dani Olmo are closed off.
Still, the conversation has largely centered on Spain’s struggle to convert their sophisticated team moves into actual scores. Both Lamine Yamal and Williams entered the tournament recovering from spring knocks; Williams has seen only 98 minutes of action across seven games, while Lamine Yamal is not yet back to his most unstoppable level. Morata didn’t make the roster due to a dip in form at his club. In short, Spain’s excellent construction play too often breaks down once it reaches the attacking third.
A systematic approach like Spain’s appears much less dazzling without an authoritative forward leading the line. Similar to a rock band missing its iconic frontman, the most brilliant instrumental work fades into the background when no one is there to seize the spotlight. A fully fit Lamine Yamal might have filled that role, but realistically, this tournament has been controlled by traditional center-forwards and shot-stoppers, not the inverted wide players who have recently ruled the Champions League and England’s top flight.
That being said, Lamine Yamal still had a vital influence on the match against France. Attacking players are taught to pounce on overeager defenders making aerial clearances, a lesson Mathys Tel demonstrated earlier in the year. As Lucas Digne prepared to hook the ball away, he opened a gap for Lamine Yamal to attack while off the ball. Drawing a penalty won’t appear in the assist statistics for Lamine Yamal, but it was a move that manufactured a 0.78 expected goal opportunity in an extremely tight contest.
From that point onward, Spain’s mastery and precise implementation trumped France’s more erratic bursts of energy. Except for their match against Paraguay, a side with less individual quality, France had overwhelmed and bypassed poorly structured rivals. Their clinical edge in those games marked them as the favorites, even though their route to the quarter-finals was relatively comfortable. Morocco was expected to provide a proper examination, but they arrived in Foxborough appearing bewildered and short on creativity before a ball had even been kicked.
Spain displayed no such anxiety, having already defeated France at the identical stage of the 2024 European Championship and the 2025 Nations League. Very few international sides possess Spain’s level of cohesion, given how many of their players were bred in a footballing philosophy shaped by the post-Pep Guardiola generation. This is the style they have always wanted to execute. These are the fixtures they longed to dominate, and through a remarkable dedication to their defensive work, they managed to do so while shutting out a French team that had been intoxicated by goalscoring up to that point.
Of course, the validity of De la Fuente’s practical approach is diminished if Spain fail to exploit the fortune they generate. Had Lamine Yamal not won that spot-kick, France would not have been under pressure before the interval. Had Olmo not delivered that perfect pass into Pedro Porro’s path while absorbing a tackle, the two-goal lead would not have materialized. The worst possible outcome occurred in their stalemate against Cape Verde, yet De la Fuente remained true to his philosophy. Ultimately, a side of Spain’s quality will generally find a way to break through as long as everyone is aligned.
Spain’s blueprint is engineered to torment any opponent that fails to bring their absolute best. This is a framework capable of overcoming any side on the global stage — even, and particularly based on three semi-final encounters, the formidable French.
