An amusing Open Goal video showing host Si Ferry admitting that he called in an attempt to bring the Anderlecht-bound Ure to East Kilbride in 2023 seems even funnier in light of the striker’s subsequent progress.
The proposal would at least have given him an opportunity to prove himself in Scotland, where promising young players still receive far too few chances.
Ure departed Rangers with three senior outings and one goal to his name before spending the next 18 months in Belgium.
Regular first-team football remained difficult to find, as he made just one senior appearance for Anderlecht despite performing well for the reserve side.
However, his switch to Sweden in 2025 transformed his career. Helsingborgs manager Stevie Grieve believes Ure has since become a complete, traditional centre-forward with the ability to spearhead Scotland’s attack.
“His natural ability was clear as soon as he arrived,” said the Scottish coach, who faced Ure twice while the striker was competing in Sweden’s second division.
Grieve explained: “He was eager to make runs beyond the defence, strong enough to protect the ball from opponents, and already showed good control and finishing ability.
“During the past year, however, he has made enormous progress with the timing of his movement, his ability to come deep and his combination play.
“He began operating more like a false nine, escaping pressure on the turn, moving the ball across the pitch, connecting play between the lines and sending teammates forward. His contribution is a major reason Sirius sit at the top of the table.”
