Sunderland have completed the €10m (£8.6m) transfer of midfielder Jules Ahoka from Belgian club Royal Antwerp.
The Black Cats confirmed that the 20-year-old DR Congo youth international has agreed to a long-term deal.
Ahoka, who played in Antwerp’s opening two league fixtures of the season, said he was delighted and honoured to join Sunderland.
He described Sunderland as an ambitious major club and expressed his excitement about the move.
The midfielder said he intends to work diligently, learn from the coaching staff and his new colleagues, and keep progressing as a player. He also promised to give his all and said he was eager to begin.
Ahoka is Sunderland’s third addition of the summer, joining Belgian left-back Thomas Meunier and French right-back Dayann Methalie.
Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the club had monitored Ahoka closely and had been impressed by the promising attributes he displayed at such a young age.
Ghisolfi added that Ahoka possesses considerable potential and that Sunderland can provide the ideal setting for his continued growth.
Sunderland began their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Ipswich on Saturday. They will face Fulham next on Sunday at 14:00 BST.
