During his playing career, Frank Lampard was coached by several renowned managers, including Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Guus Hiddink and Rafael Benitez, while his uncle Harry Redknapp also shaped his understanding of the game.
Now eight years into management, the Coventry City head coach has identified Mourinho and Ancelotti as the two biggest influences on his approach.
Lampard described the pair as contrasting personalities who represented opposite approaches to leadership.
He explained that Mourinho demanded high standards, projected confidence and responded firmly when players made mistakes. Ancelotti, by comparison, created a calm and relaxed atmosphere that made his players feel trusted. Lampard now tries to combine elements of both methods and believes his own style lies somewhere between them.
Lampard played for both managers at Chelsea, winning the Premier League and FA Cup under each of them.
As he pursues further success with Coventry, he believes finding the right balance between their contrasting styles is essential.
He said there are moments when his management resembles Mourinho’s more forceful approach, while at other times he prefers Ancelotti’s calmer manner.
Lampard added that inexperienced coaches can feel compelled to criticise poor displays or immediately discipline players for issues such as arriving late. With greater experience, however, he has learned to consider the personal circumstances behind a player’s behaviour.
He believes a manager sometimes needs to respond with patience and understanding rather than trying to appear overly strict. However, when players fail to fulfil their responsibilities on the pitch, a firmer and more demanding response may be necessary.
