The defence has been much more consistent this season, with Zak Vyner, Hyam and Callum Doyle—who scored for Wrexham in the defeat by Birmingham—forming the back three in each of the Red Dragons’ first four matches.
Parkinson also admitted that transfer speculation might have distracted some members of his squad against Birmingham, especially during the first half.
“We will keep looking for ways to strengthen the squad, but there may have been some uncertainty within the group due to possible arrivals and various rumours,” Parkinson said.
“Did that have an impact on us? I’m not certain. It appeared that way in the opening half because I wanted the team to play with greater confidence.”
Wrexham will aim to resolve their problems before facing Millwall away on Wednesday evening at 19:45 BST.
Hyam believes Wrexham’s defenders may need to develop a tougher edge to improve their performances at the back.
“There is plenty of quality in this squad, but we must create a dependable foundation, and that responsibility begins with the defence,” the Scotland centre-back added.
“As defenders, we have to take greater pride in staying organised, becoming harder to break down and protecting our goal.”
“At certain moments, we have to be more aggressive and uncompromising. We did not show enough of that tonight, so it is an area we must address.”
