Lionel Messi has brought his international career to an end.
The 39-year-old, whose Inter Miami contract runs until 2028, confirmed on Monday that his highly successful journey with Argentina was over after more than two decades.
Messi had been reflecting on his future in the sport following the death of his father, Jorge, earlier this month.
In a heartfelt tribute to his father, he suggested that retirement could be near, saying: “I am unsure how to move forward. Football was all I knew, but now I do not know how much longer I will continue playing.”
He has now officially announced his departure from international football in a post on Instagram, external, writing: “There is little time left, every chapter eventually ends, and closing this one causes me immense pain.”
The World Cup champion recorded 125 goals across 207 appearances, leaving him as Argentina’s leading goalscorer and most-capped player.
Across his spells with Barcelona, Paris St-Germain and Inter Miami, as well as his international career with Argentina, Messi has scored a total of 921 goals.
