Everton‘s proposed signing of Folarin Balogun fell through after the forward chose not to complete the transfer.
Everton initially reached a £40m agreement with Monaco for the 25-year-old, but the terms were revised following a concern that emerged during his medical examination.
The United States international is believed to have ultimately decided not to proceed with the switch.
Before the transfer window shut at 23:00 BST, Everton submitted the required deal documentation in an attempt to finalize Balogun’s arrival.
Balogun became a late option for the club after Guinea-Bissau striker Beto secured a permanent transfer to Serie A side Fiorentina.
The Toffees also considered signing Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham, but neither player could be persuaded to make the move.
Elsewhere on deadline day, Everton brought Jack Grealish back from Manchester City on a season-long loan.
Grealish previously spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Everton and played 20 matches before a foot injury in January ended his season.
The 30-year-old attracted interest from several clubs, including former side Aston Villa, but elected to return to Merseyside and work with David Moyes again.
“I perform at my highest level, both in football and in life generally, when I feel appreciated. The manager and my teammates have made me feel that way, and the supporters have done so in particular,” Grealish said.
“Whenever I meet an Everton supporter, they show me genuine affection. I will always remember how warmly they welcomed me from my first match against Leeds.”
Grealish moved from Villa to City for £100m in August 2021. During his earlier spell with Everton, he registered two goals and six assists across 20 games and was named Premier League Player of the Month for August.
The England midfielder made his comeback from injury when Manchester City lost to Arsenal in the Community Shield on 16 August.
He subsequently appeared for Enzo Maresca in City’s first match of the 2026-27 Premier League campaign, a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth.
Everton have also secured the services of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from French club Lyon.
The 29-year-old former Arsenal player, who has made five appearances for England, is capable of playing at full-back or in midfield.
In another transfer, Scotland right-back Nathan Patterson has joined Serie A outfit Torino on a permanent basis.
The 24-year-old arrived at Everton from Rangers in January 2022 and went on to feature 68 times in all competitions.
