Arsenal and Chelsea have both reshaped their squads during the summer transfer window.
The Gunners said goodbye to several established players, including Beth Mead and Katie McCabe, while strengthening their ranks with a host of notable arrivals such as England midfielder Georgia Stanway, Spanish World Cup champion Ona Batlle and Switzerland captain Geraldine Reuteler.
Chelsea, meanwhile, recruited McCabe on a free transfer and paid a fee for Manchester United forward Melvine Malard. However, the London club must now move forward without Sam Kerr and Millie Bright, two influential figures from its highly successful period.
As the pursuit of trophies begins again this weekend, Arsenal manager Renee Slegers expressed strong confidence in what her team can achieve this season.
Slegers made it clear that winning the WSL is one of Arsenal’s main objectives ahead of Sunday’s opening fixture at Brighton, saying the team is firmly focused on challenging for the title.
She added that the squad has great faith in its approach, considerable quality, several tactical options and a powerful desire to succeed.
Sunday’s match takes Arsenal back to Broadfield Stadium in Crawley, where a 1-1 draw with Brighton in May brought an end to their hopes of catching Manchester City last season.
Several dropped points in comparable matches, especially early in the campaign, proved costly for Arsenal, and Slegers is eager to prevent the same problems from happening again.
She explained that the coaching staff, captains and wider playing group have discussed last season’s difficulties. Everyone understands the obstacles they faced and is working to overcome them.
Slegers also praised the depth and ability within the squad, highlighting the wide variety of qualities the players can now offer during matches and expressing her satisfaction with the available options.
Asked whether this is the strongest Arsenal squad she has managed, Slegers agreed that it is.
