Real Madrid ‘ruled out’ a move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez this summer

The English top-flight side recruited Fernandez from Benfica soon after he played a pivotal role in Argentina securing their third World Cup title at the close of 2022.

Since his arrival, he has claimed the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup with the Blues, finding the net 15 times across all competitions last season, and he continues to be a vital part of Argentina’s setup at this summer’s World Cup.

Madrid have already brought in Marc Cucurella from Chelsea during this window, completing a move for the Spanish left-back that could rise to £51.8 million.

Their statement went on to say the club “would like to express its deepest respect for Enzo Fernandez, an exceptional footballer whose career and ability are widely recognised, and for Chelsea FC, an institution with which it enjoys an excellent relationship.

“It is precisely because of the esteem that an organisation like Chelsea FC warrants and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always directed Real Madrid’s conduct that the club finds it necessary to issue a categorical denial of unfounded speculation that does not match reality.

“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clear facts and the absence of any initiative on the club’s part, information continues to be spread that has no basis in reality, only serving to create confusion among supporters and cause unnecessary damage to the organisations and individuals involved.”

The 15-time European champions put out a similar statement last month to refute reports linking them with Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, who has stood out for France at the World Cup.
