Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall has agreed a new deal with Tottenham, just three months after expressing his desire to depart.
The 20-year-old informed the club that he hoped to secure a summer transfer after receiving few opportunities following Roberto de Zerbi’s appointment late last season.
Tottenham turned down a £38m offer from Nottingham Forest for the Sweden international, who also attracted attention from Aston Villa and Chelsea.
He has featured for only 45 minutes in the Premier League for Spurs this season.
Bergvall said he is pleased to extend his stay because he believes the club is developing something special and entering an exciting period.
He added that he is determined to fulfil his ambitions and become the strongest version of himself, both as a footballer and away from the game, and feels Tottenham is the ideal place to progress.
His personal aim is to contribute more through improved displays, goals and assists. He also said he is developing in training each day and is optimistic about the season ahead.
In July, De Zerbi described Bergvall as an outstanding talent but stressed that he would not pressure any player into remaining at the club against their wishes.
The Italian coach acknowledged that he had not always managed the midfielder’s situation correctly during the turbulent final stages of last season, when Spurs only just escaped relegation.
Discussing the new agreement, De Zerbi said he expects Bergvall’s finest football to come in the future and wants the club to provide him with the opportunity to realise his full potential.
