Chelsea may be better equipped to manage without Cole Palmer’s creative influence than they are without Caicedo’s composure on the ball and talent for disrupting opposition attacks in midfield.
Caicedo played for 72 minutes in what was his 150th appearance for the club.
His replacement by Romeo Lavia had been arranged in advance, although the Ecuadorian still had a major influence on the match.
Alonso positioned him in a deeper role, with Caicedo moving into the centre of the back three whenever Chelsea controlled possession and giving young defender Josh Acheampong the freedom to advance.
He completed all but two of his passes and registered the best passing accuracy among Chelsea’s starters. He also attempted and won more tackles than any of his teammates on Saturday afternoon.
Chelsea have won 48.1% of their Premier League games when Caicedo has featured, compared with only 25% when he has been absent.
Alonso said: “You always want Moises on the field. His presence strengthens our midfield, and being stronger in that area makes the team more complete.”
“That gives us a strong foundation. Our attacking players also contribute defensively, so I am pleased that Moises is feeling better. We always knew he would be an important player for us.”
Chelsea’s other midfield choices include captain Reece James, who can also operate in defence, as well as Romeo Lavia and Valentin Barco, although Barco was not selected for the matchday squad.
James appears the most likely player to challenge Henderson for his position when he returns, but there is still no clear assessment of his knee problem.
Chelsea are still developing as a team, and another lapse while defending a set-piece allowed Evanilson to score.
If Henderson and Caicedo can help reduce those defensive mistakes, Chelsea may start climbing the table. Pedro, Rogers and Palmer have already contributed to making them the Premier League’s leading scorers.
Alonso said: “They complement each other effectively and bring authority and stability to the team.”
“They support the players around them not only through their individual ability, but also because they read the game well. They are comfortable in tight areas and provide valuable defensive balance.”
Former England striker Alan Shearer said: “Caicedo clearly has an impact. He provides Chelsea with greater stability and helps prevent opponents from reaching the defensive line.”
“He has formed an effective partnership with Henderson, as demonstrated by the opening goal. Chelsea look much more secure with him in the team, and his performances have been very impressive.”
