While Haaland is primarily known as a dedicated goalscorer, Joao Pedro has operated in midfield, as a number 10 and on the wing throughout his career, giving him a broader range of abilities.
Alonso, who played 195 matches with former Ballon d’Or winner Benzema at Real Madrid, also identified similarities between the French striker and Joao Pedro.
The Spaniard explained that Joao Pedro reminds him of Benzema in several ways, highlighting his effectiveness both inside and outside the penalty area, his ability to move onto his left side, his heading, intelligence and overall versatility.
He added that although the forward remains young and still has areas in which he can improve, he already possesses numerous exceptional qualities.
Benzema, who is now 38 and without a club, has recorded 523 goals across 994 appearances for France, Lyon, Real Madrid, Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal.
Joao Pedro, meanwhile, was unexpectedly left out of Brazil’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, but he has since returned to the national team for September’s matches against New Zealand and India.
When asked whether being omitted by Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, who previously managed Alonso at Real Madrid, had given the player extra motivation, the Chelsea manager said Joao Pedro was already highly driven.
He acknowledged that the decision had been difficult for the forward but stressed that it now belonged in the past. The focus, he said, is on building upon Joao Pedro’s strong performances and identifying further areas for improvement.
Alonso praised him not only for his footballing displays but also for his character, maturity and determination. He added that Joao Pedro has set a clear objective for the season: to enjoy an excellent campaign and score plenty of goals.
