West Ham recorded a fourth consecutive league victory and reclaimed first place in the Championship after demolishing Wrexham 6-0 at the London Stadium. Nuno Espírito Santo’s team produced an outstanding attacking performance, cruising to a comfortable win with six players finding the net.
Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Joël Piroe doubled the advantage ahead of half-time. Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kanté and Manor Solomon added further goals after the interval to complete a difficult afternoon for the Welsh visitors. The emphatic result also underlined West Ham’s growing confidence in the second tier following a winless opening three matches after their relegation from the Premier League.
The hosts could have gone ahead within seven minutes when Castellanos headed Solomon’s cross over the bar from close range. Bowen then broke into the penalty area following a quickly taken throw-in, but Anthony Patterson reacted sharply to push his effort against the crossbar. Mavropanos headed narrowly wide at the back post from the resulting corner.
Piroe wasted a clear opportunity midway through the opening half, leaning backwards and firing well over the target. Bowen demonstrated greater composure one minute later. Morato delivered a perfectly measured cross from the right, allowing the captain to reach the ball ahead of Jacques Ekomié and steer it into the far corner.
With Mads Hermansen already beaten, Mavropanos cleared George Dobson’s attempt off the goal line in what proved to be Wrexham’s best chance. At the other end, Castellanos timed his run to remain onside, collected a through-ball and generously squared it for Piroe to establish a 2-0 lead before the interval.
Patterson denied Solomon during the opening two minutes of the second half, rushing out to block the attacker’s low effort. The relief was brief, however, as West Ham scored their third less than a minute later. Mavropanos was given too much space inside the six-yard area and headed in Bowen’s corner.
Bowen cut inside and sent an attempt just wide as the visitors struggled to contain the relentless pressure. West Ham’s fourth goal began with a Wrexham corner that failed to threaten. Kyle Walker-Peters gathered the loose ball and launched a rapid counterattack, combining with teammates before setting up Castellanos to finish calmly into the corner.
Substitute Kanté increased the lead to 5-0 with an excellent rising strike after Solomon released him behind the defence. Solomon then rounded off the scoring when his deflected effort struck the post before crossing the line.
