Richarlison: Tottenham striker’s transfer to Vasco da Gama collapses

News

Tottenham attacker Richarlison’s planned transfer to Vasco da Gama has collapsed, leaving his future uncertain.

Spurs were reportedly believed to have reached an agreement with Vasco for the 29-year-old to return to Brazil.

However, difficulties surrounding the player’s personal terms appear to have prevented the move from progressing.

With Brazil’s transfer window closing on Friday night, expectations are growing that Richarlison will remain at Spurs.

The forward was omitted from Tottenham’s Premier League squad after a proposed £35m deadline-day return to Everton fell apart because the parties could not agree on personal terms.

Reports on Thursday indicated that Richarlison and Spurs were at odds over the final nine months of his contract.

Tottenham head coach Roberto de Zerbi offered no fresh information about the Brazilian’s situation during his Friday news conference.

Richarlison is believed to be considering his alternatives and reportedly wants to be released from the rest of his current contract, which expires next summer.. Spurs, however, have the option to extend it by another 12 months.

The former Watford and Everton forward led Tottenham’s Premier League scoring chart last season with 11 goals, playing a significant role in helping the club escape relegation.

“Richarlison is a genuinely good person. We spoke many times, and I invested a lot of effort in trying to persuade him to remain here. But I understand exactly what has happened,” De Zerbi said.

“I am fully aware of everything that has taken place over the past month or 45 days. The situation is clear, but I do not feel frustrated.

“I would regret it if leaving him out of the squad had been my choice. It was not even a decision made by the club, though. It resulted from the circumstances I previously described and the choice he made…

“I am disappointed because the outcome could have been different. This story might have ended in a far more positive way, with Richarlison included in the squad, pleased to remain and perhaps willing to renew his contract, because he continues to be an important player.

“His contribution last season must be remembered, but we also cannot overlook what has happened during the past 45 days.”
