West Ham secured their first Women’s Super League victory of the campaign by beating London City Lionesses 2-1 at home.
Kelly Gago opened the scoring in the 21st minute, bursting between centre-backs Mapi León and Isa Kardinaal to collect Seraina Piubel’s pass from close to the halfway line before rounding London City goalkeeper Elene Lete. The former Real Sociedad player, who joined in 2025, has remained Eder Maestre’s preferred goalkeeper despite Mary Earps arriving during the summer.
Daniëlle van de Donk came close to levelling the score, but Constance Picaud-Inconnu made a low save. Alexia Putellas then sent the rebound over the crossbar while under pressure from Inès Belloumou.
Viviane Asseyi extended West Ham’s advantage three minutes after half-time. Released by Riko Ueki, she carried the ball through the London City half before finishing decisively.
London City created a tense conclusion when Van de Donk met Kadidiatou Diani’s low delivery with an inventive backheel that slipped inside the near post with 14 minutes remaining.
The experienced Netherlands forward had produced a comparable finish to defeat Manchester United on the opening weekend. However, the loss at Chigwell Construction Stadium provided Maestre’s team with a reminder of the challenge they face in trying to compete with the WSL’s leading sides this season.
