Former Foxes striker Matt Piper labelled the loss to Oxford a “performance worthy of dismissal”, while another ex-Leicester player, Matt Heath, questioned whether the team’s playing style could win over supporters. However, Martin continues to receive backing from his squad.
Captain Harry Souttar insisted the Oxford defeat was “entirely the players’ responsibility”, while 20-year-old defender Jayden Joseph said the team believes the manager’s tactical approach simply requires “time and patience” to succeed.
“If you talk to the players and the people who have worked alongside me, then compare their views with those of people who have only watched a few short clips, you will find a major difference between perception and reality,” Martin said.
“When you attempt something that others consider unconventional, however, criticism is always likely to follow.”
Martin acknowledged that he must perform better and continue improving and learning from his experience at Leicester, but he also reaffirmed his determination to maintain the footballing style he has introduced to the Foxes.
“I am passionate about what I do and I love my job. I am always looking to help people and players grow by using an approach that I believe allows them to become the best versions of themselves,” he said.
“That development can take time. It is challenging, but I will always prefer to pursue something I genuinely believe in, with the aim of improving while also winning. Perhaps that means I have chosen the wrong profession.
“Both the players and I have seen enough to believe that, at its best, this approach can produce outstanding football.
“I must continue learning. After leaving Rangers, I spent a considerable period away from management, studying different styles of football and working to refine my methods.
“The greatest frustration is that I have thoroughly enjoyed the work we have done here, even though the results have not yet reflected our progress. I remain certain that they eventually will; otherwise, I would change course. I intend to continue with this approach, and I sincerely believe it can lead us to significant success.”
