Coventry showed encouraging progress in last weekend’s match against Manchester City.
The Sky Blues were unfortunate to leave without at least a draw after testing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with 12 attempts and producing an expected-goals figure of 1.37.
That improvement remained evident during the opening half against Brighton. Coventry registered 10 shots and fashioned several opportunities through Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni, reaching half-time only one goal behind.
However, the contest slipped away soon after the restart. Defensive mistakes allowed Brighton to extend their advantage, and two minutes later Taiwo Awoniyi received a red card for swinging an elbow.
Coventry have now suffered defeat in each of their past 46 Premier League games after allowing the opening goal, with that sequence dating back to March 1999.
Former Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney said the 5-0 scoreline would severely damage the players’ confidence.
He added that Coventry may feel far removed from the teams above them, leaving Frank Lampard and his squad with the difficult task of recovering from the disappointment.
Rooney noted that the team had produced some positive football and created chances in its previous two matches but failed to convert them. He also felt the dismissal ended Coventry’s hopes and stressed the importance of remaining united and determined.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was also critical of Coventry’s defending.
Keane suggested that, once they were 3-0 behind, Coventry should have limited the damage and focused on their next fixture. Instead, their poor choices made them resemble a Championship side.
He warned that Lampard must prevent the players from losing confidence in themselves.
Since the Premier League was established in 1992, Southampton in 2012-13 remain the only club to have avoided relegation after losing their first four matches of a season.
Across the broader history of England’s top division, 10 of the 18 teams that began a campaign with four consecutive defeats were eventually relegated, equivalent to 56%.
