Lukas Hornicek: The defeat could have been much heavier had Hornicek not produced excellent stops to deny Bogle twice and keep out Calvert-Lewin. 6

Amar Dedic: Recovered from a hamstring problem in time to start, but endured a difficult evening as Leeds frequently attacked down his side. 4

Malick Thiaw: Wore the captain’s armband, although his display lacked authority. Calvert-Lewin beat him too easily for Leeds’ second, prompting him to strike the ground in frustration after the forward scored the third, before he was unable to stop Okafor adding a fourth. 3

Sven Botman: Struggled against Calvert-Lewin just as Thiaw did and was beaten far too comfortably in the move that produced Leeds’ second goal. 3

Lewis Hall: Lost his position during the build-up to Leeds’ second goal. It was a disappointing evening after agreeing a new contract. 4

Nico Gonzalez: Eventually left the field after only 19 minutes, having been struck on the head by the ball earlier in the match. 5

Lewis Miley: Could do very little about the deflection that led to Tanaka’s goal, but Leeds’ energetic midfield overwhelmed him and prevented him from establishing any passing tempo. 4

Jacob Murphy: Retained his place with Anthony Elanga injured, but provided insufficient defensive support and offered little threat when Newcastle moved forward. 3

Yoane Wissa: Made Newcastle’s clearest opportunity and worked hard throughout, although the quality of his final pass was inconsistent. 5

Harvey Barnes: His impressive record against Leeds appeared to give him confidence when he cut into the penalty area, but Trafford stopped his attempt. 5

Matias Fernandez-Pardo: Made his first full appearance following a £51.4m transfer from Lille. He received little useful service as Newcastle repeatedly resorted to long passes. 4

Sean Steur (on 19, Gonzalez): Entered a demanding contest after Gonzalez was withdrawn. He was unfortunate with the deflection preceding Leeds’ opener, but surrendered possession during the move for their second goal. The 18-year-old should benefit from the experience. 4

Bazoumana Toure (on 58, Murphy) Displayed tremendous speed and scored Newcastle’s consolation goal. An encouraging appearance that strengthened his case for a starting place. 6

Joe Willock (on 58, Fernandez-Pardo): Had one promising opportunity from a narrow angle, but sent his effort onto the top of the net. 5

Tino Livramento (on 58, Dedic): Took another positive step in his recovery from injury and provided the assist for Toure’s consolation goal. 6

Aladji Bamba (on 79, Miley): Made an uncommon appearance following his summer transfer from Monaco. 5
