If Leeds United do not defeat Newcastle United on Monday evening, they will contribute to an exceptionally rare moment in Premier League history.
The first nine matches of the fourth round produced no victories for the home sides. Four games ended level, while Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Manchester City all won away from home.
If Newcastle prevent Leeds from collecting all three points at Elland Road, an entire Premier League matchweek will finish without a home victory for only the fourth time in the competition’s history.
This unusual outcome last occurred on 23-24 September 2000. Seven of the 10 games that weekend ended in draws, while Southampton, West Ham United, and Charlton Athletic recorded away victories.
The other two instances came in December 1996 and on Boxing Day in 1994. The 1994-95 campaign was the final season featuring 22 clubs before the division was reduced to 20 teams.
This is the 1,308th round of matches since the Premier League began in August 1992. As the previous 1,307 completed rounds included only three such occasions, matchweeks without a single home win account for just 0.22% of the total.
In a 38-matchweek season, that is equivalent to approximately one occurrence every 11 and a half campaigns.
