Northampton Town have announced an agreement with an investment group that includes former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil striker Alexandre Pato regarding a proposed purchase of shares in the League Two side.
The planned investment by Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) received approval from the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and the English Football League (EFL) earlier this month.
The club said in a statement that it expects to confirm the completion of the transaction next week.
Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas said football club deals involve numerous elements and can take longer than anticipated, but added that he was delighted with the progress being made.
Sports Alpha Capital founding partner Joao Xavier said the group was pleased to have finalized the formal agreements.
He described the regulatory approvals as a major step and the latest agreement as another significant milestone, with the deal expected to close next week.
SAC previously held discussions about a possible takeover of Colchester United earlier this year but withdrew after the preliminary negotiations.
Pato is listed by SAC, external among its investors, alongside Gemcorp Capital, an independent investment management company headquartered in London.
The proposed percentage of Northampton shares to be acquired by SAC has not yet been revealed.
Pato, 37, ended his playing career last year. He is most widely remembered for spending five and a half years with AC Milan, scoring 63 times in 150 appearances and helping the club secure the Serie A championship in the 2010-11 campaign.
