Former England winger Andros Townsend joked that playing away at Stoke “wasn’t so bad after all” after an unusual incident in Thailand in which a pitch roller knocked him over.
The 35-year-old former Tottenham and Crystal Palace forward, now playing for Thai League 1 club PT Prachuap, attracted attention on Saturday night when footage shared on social media showed the vehicle striking him before a match at Pattani.
Townsend was completing his warm-up when a Pattani staff member appeared to lose control of the roller, which collided with the 13-time England international. His left leg was briefly trapped beneath the machine, but he escaped serious injury and later came off the bench during Prachuap’s 3-0 victory.
Townsend later made light of the accident on Instagram, referring to an earlier post in which he compared a sunny away trip in Thailand with his previous visits to Stoke’s famously windy stadium.
On his Instagram story, Townsend wrote: “It seems an away day at Stoke wasn’t that bad after all. Swipe to find out why.”
A separate post called Townsend “The King of Memes in Thai League history,” prompting him to respond with “trust me” and four laughing emojis.
