Billy Gilmour is one of the Scotland players who rarely fails to entertain.
The midfielder was sorely missed at the World Cup, but he returns in strong form after ending his Serie A campaign by scoring for Napoli at the weekend.
Nevin will be heading quickly for the Stozice Stadium exit if Gilmour is left out of the starting line-up, where he is widely expected to partner Lewis Ferguson.
McFadden described the Bologna captain as “one of our finest performers, perhaps even the best, at the World Cup.” Ferguson is also likely to have captain Andy Robertson operating to his left at wing-back.
“There is little reason to alter the midfield simply for the sake of making changes.
“Some fresh energy was necessary, but I am most interested in seeing whether their style changes on the pitch—particularly if they press with greater intensity and control possession more effectively.”
John McGinn will have a crucial role to play in that approach.
Scotland have sometimes found it difficult to deploy the Aston Villa captain in his ideal midfield role, although he continues to deliver impressive performances.
With Scott McTominay absent from the squad while recovering from successful minor heart surgery, Nevin said: “His power and acceleration are important in the attacking third, so I would prefer to see him playing slightly further forward.”
