The play-off competition will be contested over two stages from October to December 2026.
A total of 32 teams will take part in the opening round, divided into two groups known as Path 1 and Path 2.
Path 1 will feature the teams that placed second and third in League A against those that advanced to the play-offs from League C. The ties will be played over two legs in October, with each winner progressing to round two.
In Path 2, the lowest-ranked teams in League A and the leading League B group winners will meet the sides that finished second and third in League B. These October contests will also be decided over two legs, with the successful teams moving into the next round.
The second round will be held during November and December, when the winners from Path 1 take on the successful teams from Path 2 in two-legged ties. The victorious nations will secure qualification for the following year’s World Cup.
One additional country that misses out on automatic qualification will enter the inter-confederation play-offs, providing one last opportunity to reach the World Cup.
