Republic of Ireland 2-2 Austria: Hallgrimsson Hails Parrott’s ‘Magical’ Solo Strike

News

“Very few players are capable of producing something like that.”

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson used those words to describe in-form striker Troy Parrott’s outstanding opening goal in the 2-2 Uefa Nations League draw against Austria in Dublin.

After receiving a pass from Adam Idah roughly 20 yards out, Parrott paused briefly and appeared to look for support before choosing to attack on his own.

He first slipped the ball through Philipp Lienhart’s legs, then moved beyond David Affengruber and calmly finished between goalkeeper Florian Wiegele’s legs, underlining why Real Betis invested heavily in him during the summer.

Jack Moylan reacted much like the supporters in the stadium. The Cardiff City player stood with his hands on his head, smiling widely in amazement after seeing such a remarkable finish.

It ranked among the greatest goals witnessed at the Aviva Stadium, and Hallgrimsson believes it will be shown repeatedly for years.

His dramatic late winner against Hungary, which completed a hat-trick and secured a World Cup play-off place in November, may remain his most unforgettable strike. However, this effort was arguably the finest in his expanding collection of goals for Ireland.

Parrott later added a second for himself and Ireland, remaining composed as he converted a penalty just before half-time. The goal raised his international record to 14 in 40 appearances, including nine across his past six competitive matches.

His double appeared likely to deliver a second successive victory after he had also scored in Sunday’s win over Israel. Austria responded, however, pulling one back shortly before Parrott left the field in the 75th minute and equalising soon afterwards to claim a draw.

“The only disappointment is that the goal did not secure victory, although I am sure people will continue watching it for many years,” Hallgrimsson said.

The final score took some shine off an excellent individual display from Parrott, but his current progress suggests there will be plenty more memorable performances ahead.
