Republic of Ireland vs Kazakhstan: Ward Confirms Katie McCabe and Denise O’Sullivan Will Play in Cork

News

The Republic of Ireland have maintained a perfect record at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, winning all three matches staged there, including a dramatic 3-2 success over the Netherlands earlier this year.

Cork-born O’Sullivan was suspended for that fixture, but she is excited about playing in her hometown again.

“Playing here is something I truly enjoy. It means a great deal to have my family present, along with many people I grew up with who have always backed me. The support I have received from across Cork throughout my career has been incredible,” said O’Sullivan, who is expected to earn her 133rd international appearance on Tuesday, leaving her one short of Emma Byrne’s record.

“It is wonderful to return. The squad, Carla and everyone involved enjoy playing in Cork. The atmosphere is excellent, and the supporters remain vocal from the opening minute until the final whistle.”

Ward admitted that O’Sullivan was disappointed to miss the lengthy journey to Kazakhstan, although the Gotham FC midfielder understands why her workload must be managed carefully following recurring knee issues.

“I want to wear the Ireland jersey whenever the opportunity arises, but I am also grateful that Carla and the staff made a firm decision and prevented me from travelling because I have dealt with several knee injuries during the past 18 months,” the 32-year-old said.

“I value their willingness to intervene and explain that making the trip would not have been the right choice for my health.

“Eventually, I had to accept the decision. We have an excellent squad, and the players delivered a highly disciplined display.

“They completed the task successfully. Ultimately, I am pleased whenever the team earns a victory and performs well.”
