Cristiano Ronaldo Finds the Net as Al-Nassr Triumphs Following Missile Alert Delay

News

Cristiano Ronaldo found the net as Al-Nassr secured an AFC Champions League victory in a game postponed for an hour following a missile warning.

The Portuguese forward scored Al-Nassr’s second goal in Monday’s 3-1 win over Uzbek side Neftchi Fergana.

The match in Riyadh started late after Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued a security alert only 15 minutes before the planned kick-off. The capital has previously been targeted by missiles launched by Houthi forces based in Yemen.

Explosions were reported across Riyadh on Monday evening following attacks near the city’s airport. The Saudi-led military coalition stated that it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile.

The ongoing regional tensions may also disrupt future sporting fixtures, including Formula 1 events scheduled in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

When play eventually began, Ange Postecoglou’s side took the lead through Angelo in the 33rd minute, before Ronaldo added another goal ahead of the interval.

Neftchi reduced the deficit, but the Uzbek champions went down to 10 players in the 65th minute. An own goal 13 minutes later confirmed the hosts’ first Group B triumph.

Ronaldo had also scored on Friday during his return to club action after leaving Portugal’s national-team camp midway through the Nations League break because he was unhappy with his limited playing time.
